Variety of Organizations Receive Foundation Grants

Fifty-seven organizations serving a wide array of needs received Annunciation Grants on December 16, 1999. The agencies, which received a total of $289,877, reach out to needy people in many ways. Their activities include such diverse efforts as providing health promotion programs, assisting with housing and child day care, and supporting parish nurses, leadership and volunteer training, and youth education programs.

Annunciation Grants, which are for $10,000 or less, are made semiannually. The application deadline for the next grants is April 1.

In addition to the Annunciation Grants, the foundation awarded three Incarnate Word Grants. These grants support collaborative programs that are interested in partnering with the foundation to develop activities that will have a lasting influence in ameliorating social problems and improving the life of communities.

New Resource on Serving Youth

The Incarnate Word Foundation recently published Children of Promise, a new booklet to help those providing services to children and adolescents. The booklet focuses on six aspects of care: the spirituality of young people, recreational activities, early childhood care and education, urban education, residential treatment, and leadership development. Experienced leaders participated in roundtables convened by the Incarnate Word Foundation last fall. The booklet captures participants' views of the current situation in the St. Louis area and, most important, their ideas for effective approaches to the myriad problems of youth.

Copies of the booklet are available free of charge. Contact Jackie Metzler at the foundation.

Spring Annunciation Grants Deadline: April 1, 2000.

Please note: Applications that are incomplete at the deadline will not be considered for funding.

Grantee Spotlight

Whole Kids Outreach, Ellington, MO, works to decrease abuse and neglect, violence, and infant mortality and morbidity in a rural four-county area. The residents of the communities WKO serves generally are poor and have little education and poor housing. Many families experience violence and are isolated because of their remote location or lack of a telephone. A third of the agency's clients are teenage mothers and other women who, overwhelmed by poverty and discouragement, need assistance with parenting.

WKO addresses the root causes of the problems of children and families through three "circles of concern":

  • The Resource Mothers Program. Experienced mothers visit women in their homes during pregnancy and the baby's first year of life. These "resource mothers" provide health education and emotional and social support.
  • The Maternal-Child Visiting Nurse Program. Registered nurses visit clients in their homes in conjunction with the Resource Mothers Program. They provide assessment and education, with the goal of reducing infant mortality, as well as teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
  • The Child Enhancement Program. Participants in the Resource Mothers Program and the Maternal-Child Visiting Nurse Program receive a continuum of support and educational services for children who have witnessed family violence or have developmental delays or other problems.

WKO will use the Incarnate Word Grant it received last December to support these programs for mothers and children.

April Conference Will Link Faith and Health

The Faith and Health Conference, April 12-13, 2000, at St. Louis University, will feature renowned keynote speakers Rev. Martin Marty and Rev. Gary Gunderson. Participants, including agency staff members, pastors, health professionals, and educators, will share ideas on the connections between faith and health during networking meetings and a variety of workshops. The meeting is sponsored by the St. Louis Faith & Health Consortium and the Deaconess Foundation, with additional funding provided by the Incarnate Word Foundation, the Lutheran Charities Foundation of St. Louis, and the Danforth Foundation. Registration deadline is April 5. The fee is $35. The Incarnate Word Foundation will provide a limited number of scholarships. If you are interested in a scholarship, please call Jackie Metzler at the foundation at 621-4090. For more information on the conference, contact the Deaconess Foundation at 314-436-8001 or www.deaconess.org.

Preconference Session on Accountability

On April 11 Barry Kibel, PhD, will present "Journey Mapping: An Innovative Approach to Results-Based Accountability." This free all-day workshop shows how story-based data can be used as the primary form of feedback on program effectiveness. If you would like to attend, call Jackie Metzler at the Incarnate Word Foundation.
